Apartheid Was Officially Incorporated By The Afrikaner
Apartheid was officially incorporated by the Afrikaner Nationalist party in 1948. It was a system of legal discrimination, effectively revoking the rights of twenty five million black South Africans for over forty years in favor of the five million whites who had held government through colonization. The laws established under apartheid combined earlier segregation laws and customs into a new comprehensive code of racial statutes, and had as its main aim the establishment of legal separation and white supremacist rule. These policies were laid down in 1951 and were the basis for creating what were known as ââ¬ËHomelandsââ¬â¢. These were areas where black workers would have to live, yet they were considered as being outside the country, which meant that those who lived in the Homelands were required to carry passports when in South Africa. The term that was used consistently was ââ¬Å"White South Africaâ⬠as the Government intended to move every Black person to his or her separate ethnic homeland in order to have South Africa completely in the hands of the White population. Blacks were given homelands, and that meant that whatever their culture was, they had to go to the given homeland and were allowed to govern themselves independently without white intervention. Between 1976 and 1981, four of these Homelands were created, denat ionalizing nearly half of the black South African population. This was an attempt to place black peoples even lower on the social scale and further strengthen the white dominated state. Rights such as voting were restricted to the Homeland in question, therefore there could be no chance of Black interaction in South African politics. Just like America, Walt Disney is prejudiced, catalytic, and persistent. Many people use ââ¬Å"racistâ⬠in a wrong form. To be racist is to keep one race from doing something; while Walt Disney never did that. He was prejudiced against other races, which means unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostile nature, regarding a racial, religious, or national group. Although there is no hard proof to show that Walt Disney was prejudiced, he did show it in his creations, or so we think (Gabler). The Three Little Pigsâ⬠featured the wolf dressed as a Jewish peddler. The American Jewish Congress protested that the characterization was so ââ¬Å"vile, revolting and unnecessary as to constitute a direct affront to the Jews. â⬠According to Walt Disney Archives, Walt referred to Italians as ââ¬Å"garlic eatersâ⬠and used a variety of crude terms for blacks. To this day, many critics assume that the crows in Dumbo are shown as stereotypes. But Walt was no closet racist. At home he always preached racial, religious and ethnic tolerance to his two daughters. Under his supervision, Disney studios was inhospitable to many minorities, few of whom said to worked there, said that they were virtually verboten on the screen (Gabler). Everyone sees America as this ââ¬Å"welcomingâ⬠and ââ¬Å"interracialâ⬠country, but no one remembers all the terrible and hypocritical things that America has done in its history. Some would say America is paradoxal, or hypocritical, or contradictory, and while all those words do describe America, no one seems to describe America as prejudiced. The Chinese Exclusion Act was brought up in Congress due to the overflowing population of Chinese in the United States. The US needed workers to build the Transcontinental Railroad, so they brought in the Chinese to build it. After it was all done, no one knew what to do with the Chinese that were left in the country and the incoming ones. So Congress decided to pass the Chinese Exclusion Act, which permitted the Chinese entering the US starting from 1882. Congress passed the National Origins Act in 1924 because of the crazy amount of immigrants moving to the US. It excluded any Eastern and Southern Europeans and almost all Asians and other nonwhites from entering the US. This act instituted admission quotas by using the 1890 census to determine the population of a particular nationality group; the government then only allowed 2 percent of that population into the nation. After the Japanese hit Pearl Harbor in 1941, Franklin D. Roosevelt had issued an order to ââ¬Å"punishâ⬠all the Japanese living in the United States. The order gave the military broad powers to ban any Japanese citizen from a fifty to sixty mile wide coastal area stretching from Washington state to California and extending into southern Arizona. The order also authorized transporting these citizens to assembly centers, or concentration camps, hastily set up and governed by the military in California, Arizona, Washington state, and Oregon (Executive Order 9066). What does it mean to be persistent? According to the modern day dictionary it means, persisting, especially in spite of opposition, obstacles, discouragement, etc. , persevering, lasting or enduring tenaciously. Walt Disney was seen as determined and hard working, never giving up, and always having faith. His views and visions came from the fond memory of yesteryear, and persistence for the future. Disneyââ¬â¢s brothers, Roy and Raymond, had gone off to war and although he was too young to enlist his parents insisted on him not going to war. So he forged his parentsââ¬â¢ signature on a passport to go over to France as part of the Red Cross Ambulance Corps (Cole, 21). This particular action shows that Disney would not take no for an answer. He wanted to help out, so his determination showed the most during this event in his life. After completing a set of his 1st cartoons, and working every night in his garage with a borrowed camera, he sold his first set of cartoons to a local theater in Kansas City, Newman Theatre: Newman Laugh-O-Gramsâ⬠(Cole, 25). His 1st production of Alice in Wonderland had failed, so he started working on his other cartoons but when his first animations company had failed, declaring bankruptcy in the spring of 1923, he had asked Margaret Winkler, who was previously interested in Alice in Wonderland, to distribute the money in the creation (Cole, 28). Although there was a nasty court case after, Disney focused on the positives and kept on moving forward. After his bankruptcy in New York, Disney moved to California, but he was simply too young and inexperienced. So he started the same business as he did in Kansas City and started advertising his cartoons. At first, he had trouble-finding buyers, but finally he sold a serious to a local theater (Cole, 30). His life motto, ââ¬Å"Keep Moving Forwardâ⬠was included in a Disney creation of ââ¬Å"Meet the Robinsonsâ⬠to show Waltââ¬â¢s persistence and optimism. It meant to never stop, never give up, and just to ââ¬Å"Keep Moving Forwardâ⬠. This motto also shows that Disney chose to stay positive. He was never pessimistic and tried his hardest to give his all. He worked hard and even after having failed attempts at starting his own animation company, he never gave up and just kept on going. All of his hard work paid off, and we can see his magnificent work and amazing determination today. When you think of America, what is the first thing that comes to mind? First man on the moon, the hunt for Osama bin Laden, the Apollo Program, and the struggle during the Cold War perhaps? All those things were achieved by America because, America always needs to be the best of the best and beat everyone in anything. Russia sends in a man in space, America tries to override it by sending rockets in space and trying to land on the Moon. The Apollo Program was commenced because of this crazy race/competition going on with the U. S. S. R. The program was designed to land humans on the surface of the Moon. Six of the missions completed their task by landing on the moon, while the others only orbited Earthââ¬â¢s surface. This shows how hard America tried to get someone on the Moon, in which they succeeded (Williams). The first man on the Moon was the result of the Apollo Program. The legendary manââ¬â¢s name was Neil Armstrong. As spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission, Armstrong gained the distinction of being the first man to land a craft on the moon and first to step on its surface. After the tragic events of 9/11, there was a hunt to find the leader of the Al-Qaeda. After a crazy and hectic search for Osama bin Laden, the elite American forces had found him in a custom-built hideout, not far from a Pakistani military academy. It was long believed that he was hiding in caves around the world. His body was quickly buried at sea with a stunning finale to a furtive decade on the run (Osama bin Laden). Despite the inconclusiveness of the Korean War, the existence of Cuba as a Soviet satellite 90 miles from Florida, the draft dodgers and Weathermen terrorists, despite the American retreat from Vietnam, the Watts riots of 1964, the Watergate, the humiliating 1979 occupation of the U. S. embassy in Tehran, from 1947 to 1989, the U. S. successfully contained and defeated the Soviets in the Cold Warââ¬â¢s long and tedious struggle (Bay). That took extraordinary persistence. It took resilient, adaptable, creative and able military and security services. But most of all it took the basic, consistent support of the American people. The ones, who go to work, pay the bills; wear the police and military uniforms. And as John Kennedy once said ââ¬Å"bear any burden â⬠¦ to assure the survival and the success of liberty. â⬠(Bay). ââ¬Å"It all started with a mouseâ⬠is what everyone says about the Disney franchise. If you think about it, Disney had drastically changed our lives. Walt Disney can be described as catalytic, which means to be relating to or causing or involving catalysis; ââ¬Å"catalytic reactionsâ⬠, revolutionary. The Disney franchise is a big part of American culture. Kids would do anything for tickets to one of the theme parks. Florida is the top tourist city in America and the only reason it is, is because of the Disney theme parks. Just like America has affected the world with its charm and magic, so has Walt Disney. We celebrate his birthday and his accomplishments every year. His legacy will remain forever. Walt Disney has affected our generation so much and it all started when a mouse character appeared in his series of cartoons, ââ¬Å"Oswaldâ⬠. When Steamboat Willie opened at the Colony Theater in New York on November 18, 1928, Walt knew that he created something that will change the whole world (Crafton, 5). It signaled the beginnings of animation history. Most people credit Walt Disney as the one who started the animation history, however some critics say that animations have been around since late 1800s (Crafton, 6). If you travel to any country abroad, everyone would know of America as these ââ¬Å"cowboysâ⬠who run around with lassos, on horses, chasing Native Americans. That, dear readers, is the magnificent influence of America all over the world. Although everyone sees Americans as these fat, lazy, stupid human beings who eat McDonalds and watch television everyday, Europeans, Asians, Indians, Africans, etc. , praise the United States. Believe it or not, American culture has been so influential everywhere, that everyone wants to live in the US. The culture and entertainment are huge aspects of the influence that America has had on these second world, third world, and even first world European countries. There are KFCââ¬â¢s, McDonaldsââ¬â¢, and other ââ¬Å"typicalâ⬠American fast food restaurants all over the world. America is so powerful, that the celebrities, movies, and any television shows are shown in, almost, every country in the world. Entertainment and culture are not the only features that America has brought over to the rest of the world. After the all-known Revolutionary War, War of Ideas was going around the world. And what it was is that, all the countries that were ruled by kings and queens were starting to ponder upon their rulers. They wanted independence and freedom of speech. The French Revolution that happened shortly after America gained independence from Great Britain can prove that. Now all these countries were starting to revolt because they thought if an underdog, like America, can defeat and break away from a powerhouse, like Great Britain, so can they. To be the quintessential is to be the essential part of something. Walt Disney is indeed the essential whole of everyoneââ¬â¢s lives. America and Walt have both been persistent, catalytic, and prejudiced to the world. And although theyââ¬â¢ve been the bad guys sometimes, they have tremendously affected the whole world by their great determination and willpower. Answer: The society that we live in today expects those in leadership positions to express themselves in a manner that represents the authentic self. Employees of any given organization find it hard to follow a leader who does invest much effort in his leadership behaviour as they want to be led by a leader who is real. Authenticity is in most cases associated with leadership values such as honesty, integrity as well as sincerity. Whereas authenticity is an essential trait for great leadership, the concept is often confused not only by leaders but by their subjects as well. Most people tend to assume that authenticity is a quality that is innate and as a result most employees tend to judge their leaders as either being authentic or not (Ibarra, 2015, pp.53-59). Nonetheless, no one can be able to tell that they are authentic by themselves. This is a quality that can only be attributed to one by those around them basing on how the others are able to view their leadership styles. Therefore, it would be wrong to assume that authenticity is a purely innate quality. Such an assumption would mean that authenticity as a quality cannot be managed and therefore leaders are constrained and can do nothing to improve their leadership qualities and make themselves effective leaders (Ford Harding, 2011, pp.463-479). Herminia Ibarra gives an example of two leaders who hold authentic qualities; Cynthia who discloses her feelings because she believes in transparent leadership and George, a Malaysian executive who finds himself between a rock and a hard place when he is forced to adopt a leadership style which he does not believe in. From the two examples, it is quite clear that although most leaders do not like acting in a manner that goes contrary to their authentic self as it makes them look like imposters, sometimes the company one works for may force one to go against their authentic qualities for the sake of the success of the company. Similarly, some leaders cling on authenticity as an excuse to remain and operate within their comfort zones for fear of new challenges (Novicevic, et al. 2006, pp.64-76). Managers who fail to control their expression on the level of authentic qualities find it hard and troublesome to succeed whenever they ascend into positions of leadership. Authentic leadership does not allow room for manipulation. A leader with authentic qualities acts in a manner reflective of his/her aspects of inner self and hence authenticity is not just about how the leader acts (Marra, et al. 2008, pp.1-15). A great leader who possesses authentic qualities always knows how to operate in every given situation; they know the kind of personality traits to portray, who to reveal to as well as when to reveal the trait. Just like a chameleon, such leaders know how to adapt to the situational demands faced in life as well as how to tackle the varied interests of the people they lead without losing their innate identities (Diddams Chang, 2012, pp.593-603). Such leaders are able to keep focused on the goals they are to achieve while at the same time being able to remain true and not to lose sight on where they originate from. In the course of their leadership journey, they are able to adapt to their environment through experience as well as intuition. The harsh leadership environment makes them strong and resilient over time hence enabling them to gain an in-depth understanding of the expectations as well as the concerns from those people that they set out to influence (Guthey Jackson, 2008, pp.84-92). In the course of influencing the people, such leaders are able to remain authentic while at the same time being able to win over the acceptance and confidence from the people they seek to influence in the strong and diverse corporate and socio-cultural settings as well as how to manipulate the diverse cultures to enable them bring radical changes within a given environment (Lawler Ashman, 2012, pp.327-344). Hence according to Herminia Ibarra, authenticity is viewed as the gold standard upon which leadership styles are based. This article by Herminia Ibarra raises four crucial questions to be researched on. The four key questions include; What should one do to perform if they found themselves working with people who do not share their cultural norms and who have different expectation on how they should behave rather than what they believe in? What qualities should leaders possess to help them adapt to new leadership roles? How should leaders sell their ideas as well as themselves? How should a leader in a new leadership role respond to negative feedback? Authentic leadership entails performing effectively in the multicultural environment, being able to control territories that are unfamiliar, effectively selling ones ideas as well as oneself to people from diverse cultural set-up and having the ability to handle negative feedback from the audience without compromising ones authentic self (Caza Jackson, 2011, pp. 352-364). In an attempt to answer the question on what leaders should do to perform effectively among people of diverse cultural norms and holding different expectation of the leader, Erin Meyer, maintains that persuasive arguments are never universal. To her, persuasive arguments are based on cultural philosophies, religion as well as assumptions derived from ones education system. Leadership, according to Meyer operates in a similar manner as a persuasive argument. The manner in which leaders are supposed to look and sound is diverse just like the leaders themselves. According to Meyer, despite the various attempts by corporates in ensuring that leaders build an understanding of the differences in culture as well as promote diversity, there is high expectation of leaders to express ideas assertively, to be given due credit for the assertive ideas and eventually to be able to inspire and motive the people they lead with charisma (Nana, et al. 2010, pp. 720-742). Jack B. Soll, Katherine L. Milkman and John Payne, through an article, Outsmart Your Own Biases, maintain that leaders will definitely face challenges and tough traps which are brought about by the expectations the people have from them. Soll et al. encourages leaders whenever faced with various challenges to broaden their perspective and make sound judgements. Leaders should always be themselves, embra ce their own cultural norms and act to fulfil what they believe in whenever they work among people of diverse cultural norms as well as with people who hold different expectations from them rather than what they hold (Walsh Glynn, 2008, pp.262-276). The first 90 days of any leader in a new leadership role are usually very difficult and challenging. During this period, the leader faces various challenges such as aligning themselves with the demands of the new leadership role, acquainting themselves with new people who possess different cultural norms as well as trying to perform amidst different expectation from the people he/she is serving (Bligh Schyns, 2007, pp. 343-360). This leads to the question, what qualities should leaders possess to make them adapt to new leadership roles? To answer this question, scholars such as Mark Snyder, a psychologist at Minnesota University came up with two psychological profiles which influence the development of personal styles of leadership by leaders in new roles of leadership. He maintains that leaders ought to develop high self-monitor qualities as well as true to self-qualities. In the high self-monitor styles, leaders in the new roles just like chameleons camouflage into the new environment. They mingle with those they find in the new job environment and adapt to the new ways of doing things. This leadership style encourages flexibility by leaders as they are encouraged to freely and easily embrace change without necessarily feeling fake (Edwards, 2010, pp. 192-205). Snyder also encourages the leaders who may find it difficult to change and adopt new ways of behaviour to freely express their feelings and do things in the manner they are used even if their ways of doing things runs contrary to the way things are done in the new work environment. To answer this question, Stefan Thomke and Jim Manzi, in their article, The Discipline of Business Experimentation, demonstrates the leadership of an organization can test-drive innovation efforts and leadership styles to improve their efficiency and boost the quality of products produced. Thomke Manzi borrows examples of leadership from the researches conducted by Kohl, Wawa and Petco to demonstrate how a new manager can become successful by trying out new ideas and leadership styles in their new roles while minimizing risks. Good leadership according to them is reliant on the use of diverse perspectives as well as expertise of the manager. The process of growth for any leader entails possessing new leadership ideas and passing them over to other people in an attempt to influence their actions. Leaders and especially those in new leadership positions find it quite difficult to sell their ideas as well as themselves to other employees in the new organization. This forces some of the leaders to adopt a high self-monitor leadership style whereby they conform to the leadership styles they find existing within the new leadership role (Barry Meisiek, 2010, pp.331-349). However, employing such leadership styles makes the leaders to lose authenticity and appear fake. Nonetheless, for leaders who employ a true-to-self leadership style, it becomes very difficult for them to sell their ideas and themselves. To answer the question on how leaders should sell their ideas as well as themselves, Donald Sull, Rebecca Homkes and Charles Sull in their article, Why Strategy Execution Unravels-and What to Do About It, gives myths that affect leaders in the process of selling their ideas as well as themselves to the new leadership role. They maintain that the new leaders should start by first seeking to have an understanding on what is the force behind the successful execution of ideas in the new roles. By so doing the leaders will be able to identify and seize the opportunity in the new role that will go hand in hand with their strategy, identify the areas in the management styles that seem to have stalled and eventually translate the newly acquired ideas into results. By following the five myths as suggested by Sull et al, leaders will easily sell their ideas as well as themselves in the new leadership roles. In their leadership roles, several leaders face a wide range of negative feedback which they have to learn to cope with if they are to be successful in their leadership roles. In most cases, the negative feedback towards leaders in new leadership roles centres on their leadership style as opposed to their skills or expertise (Sinha, 2010, pp.185-205). As a result, most negative feedback ends up posing a threat to the identity of the leader. Ben Waber, Jennifer Magnolfi and Greg Lindsay through their article, Workspaces That Move People, offer an explanation that can help answer the question, how should a leader in anew role respond to negative feedback. In the park Paper Gwen Harwoods In the park is a poem about a lonely woman sitting in a park with her children, while a man she once loved passes by. The poem is set in Petrarchan sonnet form, with the first eight lines showing us the womans trouble and problem. However in the last six lines we see that the woman and this man will never re ignite, the last lines offer the solution to the problem. The title in this poem is very plain and almost reflects the woman and her life. Harwood begins the poem with an image of a poor woman with out of date clothes; this is a powerful impression on the reader as it immediately states that she is probably poor. The womans children whine and bicker which shows us that she may have lost interest in her children and is not giving them enough attention as they tug her skirt. Another child is very bored with herself that is shown through drawing aimless patterns in the dirt, this notion of boredom reflects directly on the life on the disheartened woman. The last line is very important, it shows us that that the woman has no self-confidence and no will to change things either. The line also shows the reader that she once had a real relationship with a man. The enjambment over the first to second stanza creates a wonderful effect as the reader sees it as too late to do anything but if one was to read on they would realise the actual meaning of the sentence as too late to feign indifference to that casual nod. The speech bubble is an important part of this poem as it suggests the womans imagination of what could have been. The cartoon-like bubble can be interpreted by the reader in one of two ways, either it is the woman thinking about what the man is thinking or it is the actual reader seeing that from the narrator, this effect brings depth into the poem which in turn makes it more effective. This image of self-pity relates to the plainness in her life and the way she takes no interest in her children, the woman has almost become reckless and careless with her life and her childrens. This slight conversation between man and woman hints at the reader that there could be a budding relationship, Harwood seems to be presenting us with the typical Petrarchan Sonnet problem by offering that these two could be a couple. In the last stanza, the man and the woman converse about the children and how they have grown, but this conversation seems to be only the polite chatter and not a heart felt one. This stanza gives us the answer to the problem presented about these two possible lovers. As the man begins to walk away, the woman is still speaking; this is a great symbolisation of what has been happening to the woman her whole life. It is as if the woman has never finished anything off and suggests that she usually is trying to bring things together and putting the last word in. After the man has left her presence, the woman is nursing the youngest child and shows the reader the real reason for most of her woes. She speaks to the wind, which again reflects her state of mind and refers to her children, they have eaten me alive. This last line of the poem is a powerful image of blame, not on her but on others. Harwoods in the park portrays a woman whose life is in a downward spiral and becoming lifeless. The woman in the poem who is suggestively not named has been in love but is now out of it. The poem shows the reader how the womans continuous negative output seems to upset all people around her.

T. H. White's The Once and Future King is one of the most complete and unique portrayals of the immortal legend of King Arthur. Though it has been in print for less than half a century, it has already been declared a classic by many, and is often referred to as the "bible" of Arthurian legend. White recreates the epic saga of King Arthur, from his childhood education and experiences until his very death, in a truly insightful and new way. This is not, however, the first complete novel of Arthur's life. In the fifteenth century, Sir Thomas Malory wrote Morte d'Arthur, the first complete tale of Arthur's life. Since then, a countless number of books have been written on the subject, yet none can compare to The Once and Future King. It has easily become the most popular of all the Arthurian novels as it is loved by both children and adults. Though similar in many ways to other works of the same subject, such as Malory's, White gives new details, meanings, and insightful modern ization to the story, giving it an earthy quality, which the reader can identify with. White's rendering of the Arthurian legend differs from the traditional versions in that he includes contemporary knowledge and concepts, adds new stories and characters to the legend, and provides new perspectives by probing deeper into the existing tales. Anachronism It is the contemporary tone in The Once and Future King, which gives the novel its present-day feeling. This helps the reader to relate to the story, rather than placing it in strictly within the context of the Arthurian period. For example, early in the novel Eton College is referred to, which White then points out "was not founded until 1440," but the place was nevertheless "of the same sort"(4). Another example of anachronism can be found during a discussion between Merlyn and Wart, when Merlyn exclaims "Castor and Pollux blow me to Bermuda!" (86). During the days of Arthur, Bermuda was an unknown place, and would not be discovered until the fifteenth century. Though these references have no true significance to the plot of the story, White uses anachronism as a device to aid the reader in association with the context. And, as in other of White's novels, "the author's presence is apparent" (Fries 260), giving the feeling of an oral storytell ing. These "almost too frequent histori... ... often" (28). This depiction of Merlyn shows his amusing and funny personality, which White exposes throughout the novel. The frequent use of comedy gives White's novel a unique twist which cannot be found in the traditional versions of the story. When T. H. White decided to write The Once and Future King, he realized that his task would be an ambitious one. He faced the challenge of telling a tale which has been present for centuries, in a new way which would make it of interest to readers. His recreation of the Arthurian legend more than lives up to that challenge. The addition of new themes, anachronism, characters such as King Pellinore, and new adventures gives the novel a unique flair without straying too far from the traditional legend. The deeper interpretations of the characters and events in the story provide for a truth and authenticity not to be found in similar works, and the sense of humor gives White's novel an individual touch. T. H. White's The Once and Future King is one of the best retellings of the Arthurian legend, and his additions to the tale create an invigorating and entertaining combination, ranking it among the most popular and best read of all.

Graduating college, getting a job, getting married, buying a house and having kids. For most people these are joyous events that are celebrated with family and friends; and come with hard work. However some people have a different mindset towards life. They perform tasks for the mere sake of getting the job done and life almost seems like a check list. There is a difference between being alive and truly living. Being alive is fulfilling the responsibilities and duties that are required of you. Truly living is when you seize every moment and make the most of it. One appreciates the small pleasures in life and is satisfied with what he or she has. It is easy to go through life without realizing you are not enjoying it. We get so caught up in trying to be the best version of ourselves that we donââ¬â¢t stop and appreciate the small things that bring every day joy. In ââ¬Å"The Death of Ivan Ilychâ⬠Leo Tolstoy examines the life of a man, Ivan, who would have seemed to live a typical life with adequate wealth, high position, and family. However as we read on we come to realize that he is living almost robotically. Relationships donââ¬â¢t have much value in his life. He does what he thinks is the right thing to do, and follows the examples of everyone around him. He is scared of getting left behind and wants to make a name for himself. This leads to Ivan Ilychââ¬â¢s life being ââ¬Å"most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terribleâ⬠(1458). His life ends up being a total waste with no real friends, no happiness and lots of regret. It is not until Ivan is on his death bed in his final momentsà that he realizes that the personal relationships we forge are more important in life than who we are or what we own. But by then itââ¬â¢s too late. Todayââ¬â¢s society is very fast paced; everyone is always on the go. People think about the big picture and miss the small details of life. This is a very common mistake in the western culture. All working people want to follow the script of life, but th ere are some extremists like Ivan that take it to the next level. With every aspect in his life he wants to be perfect and will do anything to achieve and maintain his status. An example of his extreme behavior is his love life. Ivan was at a point in his life where he settled down in a new town and life was pleasant. There ââ¬Å"he met his future wife, Praskovya Fedorovana Mikhel, who was the most attractive, clever and brilliant girl of the set in which he movedâ⬠(1461). He establishes a light relation with her; and slowly she falls in love with him. Ivan had no intension of marrying her, he thinks of his marriage primarily in terms of himself. He thinks of marrying her only because she had all the qualities that he thinks a good wife is supposed to have; she came from a good family, was good looking, had an income and ââ¬Å"it [marriage] was considered the right thing by most highly placed of his associatesâ⬠(1461). So Ivan gets married; it doesnââ¬â¢t sound like he is madly in love with her. Itââ¬â¢s more like he marries her because other people tell him itââ¬â¢s a good thing to do and he doesnââ¬â¢t have any objections. For I van other peopleââ¬â¢s approval and views matter more than his own views. Marriage is one of the most important and joyous events in oneââ¬â¢s life; mostà people get married when they think is the right time for them and with whom they think is the right person, however for Ivan itââ¬â¢s just another task on the checklist. In other words Ivan got married just for the sake of getting married. There was no joy or excitement; he makes marriage look like a simple and ordinary event in oneââ¬â¢s life. Relationships are easy to make but hard to maintain. As Ivanââ¬â¢s married life goes on he realizes that marriage is not as easy and pleasant as he thought. As things started to change in his life, he felt depressed and helpless. He wants to escape and live life his own way, invite friends over for a game of cards and go to the club in the evenings. On the other hand his wife wanted him to spend more time with her and there was nothing wrong with that, it is expected. Every wife wantsà her husband to spend time with her especially while sheââ¬â¢s pregnant. However for Ivan his work is more attractive because it brings him success and thatââ¬â¢s whatââ¬â¢s most important to him. He doesnââ¬â¢t understand the importance of family and ignores his wife; Ivan spends more time at work and becomes more ambitious than before. Money is an essential need in life and it is a manââ¬â¢s responsibility to provide his family with all the comforts of life, since the men are usually the breadwinners of the household. However if you pay too much attention to money it can damage your relationship with your family because you lose out on time with them. Relationships with family have a much larger effect on quality of life than money does. However Ivan fails to realize this and concentrations totally on work, it is not until heââ¬â¢s on his death bed that he understands the importance of family in life but by then itââ¬â¢s too late. Going back into his childhood it is clear that Ivan was just what ââ¬Å"he remained for the rest of his life: a capable, cheerful, good-natured, and sociable manâ⬠(1459). Everyone has someone or the other who they look up to and follow in life. Ivan was attached to people of high position, therefore established friendly relations with them. He took their blueprint of life which consisted to wealth and social status; and blindly followed it. Ivan did all the things they did, even though he didnââ¬â¢t like what he was doing. He was disgusted with himself and regarded everything he did to be wrong but because all these things were done by people with good position, it did not matter (1459). Childhood is the best part for most people; they do what they want, donââ¬â¢t care about others and most importantly have fun. However Ivan got so caught up in being the best version of himself, he missed all these cheerful things. He did what he thought to be the right things, which were the things done by successful people. It is not bad to follow successful people, everyone should do that however not to the extent that Ivan did. He did not listen to his heart or brain. He even chose his friends on the base of their social status and not whether he liked them or not. If something seemed wrong to him, he tried to forget it only because it was regarded right by the people with good position. There wasnââ¬â¢t anything special about his childhood, he basically followed a script. After law school Ivanââ¬â¢s life is pleasant; he performs his job and makes his career in the province. Laterà in his life he takes up the post of examining magistrate in a new town (1460). His social life picks up where it left off. Ivan ââ¬Å"picked out the best circle of legal gentlemen and wealthy gentry living in the town â⬠(1461) to associate with. Hereââ¬â¢s another example where Ivan does something because it seems the right thing to do. He wanted to be recognized in society and be powerful so he establishes relationships with rich and powerful people. It didnââ¬â¢t matter if he liked them or not. The relationships he developed with them were on the surface and were just a show, compared to normal friendships that last forever. These men did not have any meaning in his life and vice versa; this is proven when he passed away and his friends care more about their promotions rather than being sad on a loss of a friend. People always compare their lifestyles and what they have to their friends and people around them. Itââ¬â¢s a non-ending cycle of always wanting what you donââ¬â¢t have. Ivan was never content with what he had, and it was evident in his life choices. After working as an examining magistrate for a while ââ¬Å"he was expecting to be offered the post of a presiding judge in a University townâ⬠(1463). Instead to his horror a colleague got the post. In response to this he quit his job. He began actively hunting for a better position and succeeded. His friend helped him land a position that was two times better than his old one. He was thrilled that he proved his colleagues wrong who failed to appreciate him. It is evident that he was more excited to show off his new position to his ââ¬Å"enemiesâ⬠than to be genuinely happy about being able to provide more for his kids and wife. We should always take a moment to step back and enjoy what they have before life makes us realize itââ¬â¢s too late. With Ivanââ¬â¢s new job came more money. This led to a bigger and better lifestyle. He bought a grand house and furnished it with expensive pieces. Slowly his dream of having everything he could ever dream of was coming true. He had obtained the status he always wanted, purchased all the expensive things and was slowly getting satisfied with everything. As he settled in to the new lifestyle he always wanted; he quickly became bored. It wasnââ¬â¢t as great as he thought it would be. All throughout his life he always looked at the big picture. He was so concentrated on getting his dream job, house and lif estyle that he didnââ¬â¢t enjoy and appreciate the small pleasures that came along the way. He sacrificed all the small joys of life for the end result and now that it was time for Ivan to enjoy the results ofà his hard work, life took a turn in the opposite direction. As he was setting up his new house, he injured himself while putting up curtains. As time went on his injury got worse, and he was never able to fully enjoy the things he had worked for. Ivanââ¬â¢s life had no special moments, as he never understood the joy in small achievements. He took them as simple and ordinary things. As we examine Ivanââ¬â¢s life it is clear to us that it was a total failure as most of the time he was lonely and didnââ¬â¢t have any friends or family he confided his worries to. He never paid attention to his relationships and did not make an effort towards them. As his Injury gets worse it begins to take a toll on his life, forcing him to stay at home. Now that he is at home all the time he begins thinking of his life and starts reflecting on it. Slowly everything hits him. All the mistakes he made are becoming visible to him from his childhood to his relationship with his wife to his job. He is realizing he spent his whole life chasing what he thought would make him a happy man and that he really wasnââ¬â¢t happy at all. He did not establish any friendships at a young age, and the ones that he did were not real, they were on the surface. His life is flashing before his eyes. The empty feeling he had his whole life is turning into regret. As he thinks about his mistakes he realizes that he intended to live life in a certain way, but ended up living in a completely different manner. Like everyone else Ivan didnââ¬â¢t realize this while he wasà making these mistakes. He wasted his life running after wealth and status; and failed to build real relationships. In reality he didnââ¬â¢t achieve anything in life other than tangible objects. We as the reader saw these opportunities for him to change throughout his life. As a child Ivan didnââ¬â¢t like what he was doing. He was disgusted with the things he did to become one of the high positioned people. He could have understood that this is not the right way to live life but he was so determined to achieve his goal he turned wrong things into right in his eyes. Later on in his life after he got married, his wife showed frustration towards him, she wasnââ¬â¢t happy with the way of his lifestyle. Most people care about their close ones and try to change for them, whereas Ivan ran away from the situation and started working more and spending less time with his family. He did the opposite of what a normal person would do. Instead of listening to his heart and brainà he changed his morals; instead of strengthening his relations he neglected them. His life choices were ordinary; it seemed like he was just being alive and not truly living. Normally when people die, they are remembered for all the memories and great things they did. Their loved ones grieve over the loss of a friend and family member. A person leaves a legacy after passing away. Many want that legacy to be one of the good times and the memories spent with people you love. However Ivan was unsuccessful in doing that. He was so obsessed with being successful while he was alive it was evident his friends were friends with him for all the wrong reason. After receiving the news of their friend Ivanââ¬â¢s death the first thought of each of his friends was of the changes and promotions it might occasion amongà themselves or their acquaintances (1453). Instead of being sad, his friends thought of the benefits theyââ¬â¢d get. This shows the type of friendship he had established with his friends. Not only had his friends, his wife too thought about the benefits of his death. Her main concern was ââ¬Å"how she could obtain a grant of money from the government on the occasion of her husbandââ¬â¢s death (1457). This was a result of Ivanââ¬â¢s behavior and lack of love towards her. She was a good and loving person; but over time marriage changed her. While Ivan was alive he didnââ¬â¢t treat her with love or give her the place of a wife in his life. Ivanââ¬â¢s wifeââ¬â¢s and friendsââ¬â¢ behavior give a perfect picture of how he lived his life. He just fulfilled his responsibilities just for the sake of getting them done. Ivan was ordinary in the sense that he had no friends or loved ones. For an outsider looking in on his life he had it all; a big house, nice car, wife, kids and respectable job. However life is not about the tangible objects; houses and cars are just materials but life has a bigger meaning than that. At the end of the day if all the objects were to be taken away from him he has no relationships to hold onto. Life always boils down to the relationships we have, our loved ones and the happiness of our families. It is unfortunate that Ivan realized this when it was too late and he couldnââ¬â¢t do anything about it. Hence his life was ââ¬Å"most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terribleâ⬠. Ivanââ¬â¢s misunderstanding of the things that truly mattered in life is what made his life so terrible. Love, respect, intimacy, and happiness are the things that really make life worth living not wealth, power, and property.

Deontology and Utilitarianism Essay
There are two types of Deontology the first one is, one should act based on duty, and the second one is action should be based on the right intention and nothing else. Utilitarianism is when you have to think about the majority of the people no matter what the consequences is. It is based on maximizing happiness for everyone involved. I would favor Deontology because I think you should do your duty and only do what is right. If you have the right intention you can accomplish anything. If you murder someone I think itââ¬â¢s wrong no matter whom you did it for or why you did it. There are many reasons I disagreed with utilitarianism for example if a hospital had four patients who are dying with the same disease and there is a healthy patient that can help all four dying patients utilitarianism will kill the healthy patient to do justice to the majority of the people. I think thatââ¬â¢s wrong because by killing one healthy patient you do not know what the survival rate is for the four sick patients. The reason I chose deontology is because I believe in doing the right thing based on the duties. No matter how close you are to a person you should always turn them in if they are wrong. If they are stealing form someone right then you should know how she/he is because if they are stilling from someone else then how do you know they will not steal from you. I think if I have the right intention I could not go wrong with anything.

With the Inner Party at the helm, Oceanian society has been deliberately drawn down to a deep, inescapable socioeconomic morass, with Party exercising its conscious aim of nurturing a state of unfreedom and inequality. Having learnt a great deal from totalitarian regimes that had failed in the past, the Inner Party became a small ruling group that was determined to create a societal structure that would ensure the Party maintained a permanent stronghold over Oceania and its people. Unlike their predecessors, the Inner Party was comprised of people who were less avaricious, less tempted by luxury, hungrier for pure power, and above all, more conscious of what they were doing and more intent on crushing opposition. From this steely resolve of the Inner Party to be the eternal guardians of power in Oceania stems the wide and varied sources of truth and power held be the totalitarian regime. Collectively, these sources present a frightening combination that, fundamentally, serves to destroy the essence of the human spirit and to ensure the ruling group an endless reign of power. As Orwell details in the appendix of the novel, control over language is one of the major sources of truth and power held by Oceanias totalitarian regime. The introduction and steady implementation of Newspeak as the language of choice for Party members, meant that the Party effectively assumed control of the boundaries of human expression and thought. The elimination of words and phrases considered unfavourable to the Party and its ideals made it extremely difficult to express conflicting or derogatory views towards the Party. And, with this suppression of free thought through language, the Party is also able to eliminate unwanted ideas, emotions, and ideals associated with those words. The embodiment of the slogan Ignorance is Strength is another source of power for the totalitarian regime in Oceania. The Party exploits the basic idea that ignorant people are content people; simply because they have no standard of comparison. Although life is far from rosy for members of the Outer Party, they are, nevertheless, satisfied with their existence. Primary reasons for this are that Party members are led to believe that standards of living are constantly improving, and that their cooperation is imperative for the continual war effort to succeed. Thus, the Party achieves an assurance to their stronghold over members by eliminating feelings of dissent and dissatisfaction towards the Party with imposition of obligation. Another unmistakable source of power for the Inner Party is their thorough and seemingly infallible surveillance and compliance network, comprised of the Thought Police, omnipresent telescreens, Youth League Spies and the mutual fear of the consequences of unorthodoxy, which virtually ensures widespread conformity. And, since the party has comprehensive control of the present, they also have an equally extensive control over the past, and thus truth. All historical records and print media is endlessly fabricated and tailored to conform with the Partys current position, further enhancing the Partys power over the people. Another important source of power for the ruling group is war. In becoming continuous, war has ceased to exist in Oceanian society. And, as it consumes the products of human labour that would otherwise be used to increase the standard of living for Outer Party members, war ensures the permanence of the current order in Oceania. The abolition of interpersonal relationships, the destruction of family, and the removal of all endearing emotion from the sexual act left widespread insecurity, which the Party exploits to nurture a mutual emotional attachment to Big Brother. However, none of the aforementioned ploys of Oceanias totalitarian regime would be possible without the indoctrination of Party members with the skills of doublethink and crimestop. Particularly doublethink, which renders Party members infinitely malleable to the will of the Party, thus ensuring that the Partys goal of permanent power seems infallible.

Black Holes Everyday we look out upon the night sky, wondering and dreaming of what lies beyond our planet. The universe that we live in is so diverse and unique, and it interests us to learn about all the variance that lies beyond our grasp. Within this marvel of wonders our universe holds a mystery that is very difficult to understand because of the complications that arise when trying to examine and explore the principles of space. That mystery happens to be that of the ever clandestine, black hole. This essay will hopefully give you the knowledge and understanding of the concepts, properties, and processes involved with the space phenomenon of the black hole. It will describe how a black hole is generally formed, how it functions, and the effects it has on the universe. In order to understand what exactly a black hole is, we must first take a look at the basis for the cause of a black hole. All black holes are formed from the gravitational collapse of a star, usually having a great, massive, core. A star is created when huge, gigantic, gas clouds bind together due to attractive forces and form a hot core, combined from all the energy of the two gas clouds. This energy produced is so great when it first collides, that a nuclear reaction occurs and the gases within the star start to burn continuously. The Hydrogen gas is usually the first type of gas consumed in a star and then other gas elements such as Carbon, Oxygen, and Helium are consumed. This chain reaction fuels the star for millions or billions of years depending upon the amount of gases there are. The star manages to avoid collapsing at this point because of the equilibrium achieved by itself. The gravitational pull from the core of the star is equal to the gravitational pull of the gases forming a type of orbit, however when this equality is broken the star can go into several different stages. Usually if the star is small in mass, most of the gases will be consumed while some of it escapes. This occurs because there is not a tremendous gravitational pull upon those gases and therefore the star weakens and becomes smaller. It is then referred to as a White Dwarf. If the star was to have a larger mass however, then it may possibly Supernova, meaning that the nuclear fusion within the star simply goes out of control causing the star to explode. After exploding a fraction of the star is usually left (if it has not turned into pure gas) and that fraction of the star is known as a neutron star. A black hole is one of the last option that a star may take. If the core of the star is so massive (approximately 6-8 solar masses; one solar mass being equal to the sun's mass) then it is most likely that when the star's gases are almost consumed those gases will collapse inward, forced into the core by the gravitational force laid upon them. After a black hole is created, the gravitational force continues to pull in space debris and other type of matters to help add to the mass of the core, making the hole stronger and more powerful. Most black holes tend to be in a consistent spinning motion. This motion absorbs various matter and spins it within the ring (known as the Event Horizon) that is formed around the black hole. The matter keeps within the Event Horizon until it has spun into the centre where it is concentrated within the core adding to the mass. Such spinning black holes are known as Kerr Black Holes. Most black holes orbit around stars due to the fact that they once were a star, and this may cause some problems for the neighboring stars. If a black hole gets powerful enough it may actually pull a star into it and disrupt the orbit of many other stars. The black hole could then grow even stronger (from the star's mass) as to possibly absorb another. When a black hole absorbs a star, the star is first pulled into the Ergosphere, which sweeps all the matter into the Event Horizon, named for it's flat horizontal

The Great Exhibition of 1851 The Great Exhibition of 1851, also referred to as the Crystal Palace Exhibition, took place in London in May of 1851. The idea was based on creating a temporary structure that combined the cultural and industrial changes of the time. The main features of the exhibition were based on having a highlight to modern approaches to industry and design, specifically as a response to the French Industrial Exposition of 1844. The motive was to make a statement that Britain was a leader in the concepts of industry and culture and had superior achievements to others that were a part of the changes into modernism during this specific time frame. The exhibition was formed over a period of 10 days by Joseph Paxton, specifically which was designed as a glass house or green house that stood 1851 feet long and 454 feet wide. The cost to build the exhibit was 500,000 but made a surplus of 16,190,000 pounds as of 2012. The price of admission ranged, dependent on the status of the individual, ranging from three guineas to five shillings. The opening day held 2,500 people as a part of the exhibition with 1/3 of the population, or six million people, going to the final exhibition (Victorian Station, 2001:1). The basis of the Crystal Palace provided a vari ety of benefits to London and to the holding of the exhibition. The Great Exhibition is now recognized as one of the best world exhibits that was made, specifically which allowed the UK to become recognized as a world leader. The benefits furthered with noting the industrial and technological movements which were in society. The innovations which were added had displays of how different pieces of machinery and other operations were conducted. Those who were visiting the exhibition were able to take part in a deeper understanding of the movement forward with technology and how this was creating an alteration into society at the time. This was furthered with the openness to the cultural relations, art and architecture that was displayed and the music, cultural performances and political recognition which were associated with the exhibition. Each of these were able to influence and create interest within society based on the variety of shows which were held and how this was leading the innovation as well as the various concepts within the historical moments. The interest which this gathered and the approaches which were taken to gain this recognition then allowed the doors of the UK to open into cultural relations, recognition with the technology and responses which were noted from the surrounding society (Victoria Station, 2001:1). An important component with the Great Exhibition was based on the design and architecture which was used in developing the correct approach to the exhibit.

Given that the international integration of national economies has such a profound effect, globalization plays a central role in determining the future of the world.â⬠While globalization, to many, provides a sign of supremacy as having the key to make societies prosperous through trade, at the same time sharing their intelligence and education proficiency to people around the world, there are still numerous populations who perceives globalization as the root of the global problem where some who are well-off and educated are exploiting the needy through different means and tactics throwing more chaos into the situation as we know it, and also as a threat that accelerated modernization might eventually harm the conventional cultures they have practiced before globalization took over. The growing rivalry between China and Japan could serves as an example that globalization does indeed, do not help solve feuds between countries that are involved in economic globalization terms. Japan, meanwhile, which calls the territory the Senkaku islands, displaying its version of defense by broadening the area of patrol over the islands with countless warships and planes and plans to try to involve the participation of the US to their side against the matter. With China growing in power and influence due to globalization, as like any other empire in the past, as its power grows, that power is ineluctably projected to surround immediate neighboring countries and, in time, geographical regions and even whole continents. With this imbalanced strength in the area of Asia, Chinaââ¬â¢s growing eagerness to throw its weight around has put other neighboring countries on brink and triggered them to seek U.S. assistance, the only possible means that can keep China in-check as an equal or more. Beginning from the year of 2010, China constantly fueled the concerns of its neighbors with unending, disturbing diplomatic and military moves, including their eye catching dispute currently still ongoing on the South China Sea, where it is believed that profitable resources are hidden but more importantly, the routes commercial ships passes through are located in the area. This region has sparked countless conflicts between countries nearby with different parts occupied by one another. Nonetheless, China claimed the largest portion over the South China Sea, an area that encircles the South China Sea district like a U-shaped section. Through globalization, China has gained immense power through a period of time and is gradually getting carried away with its actions. In cases where if the U.S. is unable to provide assurance to Chinaââ¬â¢s neighboring countries, situations may turn the other way round and most likely gone aggressive, which will in time become a reality if no further actions are taken. With this in mind, I do think that globalization has more negative effects than positive due to the amount of imbalance the world is facing at this point of time, where countries are flourishing in their wealth and others that couldnââ¬â¢t keep up the pace has fallen right to the bottom of the ââ¬Å"food chainâ⬠. All merchandise sold by chain is private label. The Gap was founded in 1969 when Donald Fisher and his wife, Doris opened a small clothing store near San Francisco State University. By 1971 they were operating six Gap stores. In 1995, Fisher retired as CEO and Drexler, now age 50, took over the title. The Gap contracted with over 500 manufacturers around the world that made the companies private label apparel according to Gap specifications. Gap, Inc purchased about 30 % of its cloth from manufacturer located in United State and 70% from vendor located in 46 foreign countries. No single supplier provided more than 5 % of its merchandise. In the wake of concern over third world working conditions, the Gap also adopted a set of sourcing principle and guideline. This provide standard that the vendors had to meet including: engage in no form of discrimination, used no forced or prison labor, employee no children under 14 years of age, provide a safe working environment for employees, pay the legal minimum weight of the local industry standard- whichever is greater. The Gapââ¬â¢s supplier should also meet all applicable local environmental regulation, and comply with the Gap own more stringent environmental standards, neither threaten nor penalize employees for their efforts to organize or bargain collectively and uphold local custom laws. To ensure compliance with its standards, the Gap sends a Gap Field Representative to conduct in-depth interview with a prospective supplier prior to the initiation of a business relationship. The Gap supplier in Salvador, run by Mandarin International, Taiwanese-owned Company that operated apparel assembly plants around the world. The Gap had begun contracting with Mandarin plants in El Salvador in 1992. A worker there was paid approximately 12 cents for assembling a Gap three-quarter sleeves t-shirt or turtle neck, which retailed at about $20 in the United States. The supplier which doesnââ¬â¢t implemented the entire Gap standard and the local government standard, the Gap should avoid doing business with them. - Mandarin International done unethical business by not allowing their employee to make union (fired all the union members) and all the unethical behavior toward the employee. Recommendation - The Gap should choose their supplier carefully and maximize the Gap field representative by put an eyes and do the regular inspection not only when they start the business but always monitoring the working and social condition of the supplier to comply with the Gap code of conduct and also the local government laws. - The Gap representative officer should do the interview without being known by the Mandarin International, so the employee would be freely to speak about what really happened in the factory. - The Gap should give more effort to increase the quality of live their supplier employee which usually in the third world by giving education or other benefit.
